Author Interview: Melanie Dawn

We got a chance to ask Melanie Dawn, the author of the new book: So Much It Hurts, a few questions! 🙂 Check them out:

      1. Who or what inspired you to become a writer?
I always enjoyed writing when I was younger. I have an active imagination. I hadn’t really written much in several years, but one night about four years ago I was struck with insomnia, so I just sat down and started typing. Every day I typed a little more and a little more. Before I knew it, I had 40K words. I let a few friends read it and they encouraged me to consider getting it published. So…here I am. :).
      2. Where do you get your ideas from? Do they come to you or are they inspired by true events?
I think a lot of times authors write what they know. While the story of So Much It Hurts is completely fictional, some of the characters were inspired by real people I’ve known throughout my life.
      3. Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what do you listen to?
I can’t write to music. I need silence to write. However, I am inspired by music. If I’m experiencing writer’s block, I will sit down and go through a playlist for inspiration. The songs that really inspired my story were Everything by Lifehouse, You and Me by Lifehouse, And Still by Reba McEntire, and The Dance by Garth Brooks. Another reader also pointed out that The Hardest Thing by Tyler Ward fits perfectly with the story. That song has been on repeat ever since…So Much It Hurts Cover
      4. What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why? Hardest?
I had two favorite chapters. I enjoyed writing Chapter Six. It took me back to my time in high school as a cheerleader. We lived for Friday night football games! I still remember the feel in the air and the roar of the crowd…such a fun time in my life.  I also loved writing Chapter Eighteen. Remembering the feel of the sand between my toes…and the fun and relaxing times I’ve had with friends at the beach, lounging by the pool. I love writing about vacations…the food, the weather, the friendships…It’s nice to escape into my mind sometimes. 🙂  The hardest part to write was the scene at the waterfall and the morning following that. I had to go to a dark place to make those two scenes as real and emotionally authentic as possible. It was a tough place to be for a while.  The epilogue was also difficult because not only did I have to switch POVs, but…well…after you read it you’ll understand.
      5. Which of your characters would you like to meet in person and why? What would you say to that person?
I would like to meet Michael. I would simply give him a hug.
      6. Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
Never give up. Surround yourself with friends who will always support you and encourage you along the way. It’s not the journey to the top that matters. It’s about the friends you make along the way instead!

Novel Teasers 😉 :

        1. Favorite ice cream flavor. Mint Chocolate Chip
        2. Book or movie? Both for different reasons, but typically I like the book better than the movie anyway.
        3. Favorite childhood toy you wished you still had. My favorite childhood toys were my Cabbage Patch Kids, and I still have all of those!
        4. What side of the bed do you sleep on? The left side.
        5. Light or dark chocolate? Dark chocolate!!!

Melanie Dawn Author picAbout Melanie Dawn:

Melanie Dawn is a thinker, a dreamer, and a hopeless romantic. When her head isn’t in the clouds, she spends her time as a jack of all trades to her family. Melanie resides in the hills of North Carolina with her husband, her three children, and her cat. She enjoys lazy summer afternoons cruising around the lake on the pontoon boat with her family.

Melanie graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BA in Psychology and earned her MA in School Counseling from Appalachian State University. She spent the first six years after graduate school as a middle school counselor. Those were years she deems as some of the best years of her life. That is, until she had children of her own. The last seven years have been spent as a stay-at-home mom. She has learned some tough life lessons, like what the inner absorbent pellets of a diaper look like scattered in the washing machine.

She has also learned the strength of the willpower of a two year old lacking a nap. Through it all, Melanie has learned how to roll with the punches and appreciate the time she has been able to spend at home with her children.

Now that her last child has started Kindergarten, Melanie is ready to add a new chapter in her life. That chapter begins with her debut novel—So Much It Hurts.
